This variation on a carpet mosaic was created with Mexican smalti on a background of coloured tile adhesive.
Mexican smalti were invented when master craftsman Elpidio Perdomo left his Venetian home in Murano to start ‘the first glass mosaic factory in the Americas’ in 1949. He combined centuries of experience in technique with new materials in Mexico and a different cut to produce this beautiful type of glass. In contrast to the Italian smalti, these glass tesserae celebrate their colour variations, and pots are often not replaced to produce a new colour. This gives them the wildness and shimmer that resembles the colourful dance of flames.
